Mahurangi Matters recently contacted us to interview Aldo and went on to feature many of Warkworth’s top Neville Street eateries in their Feb issue. Below is the feature about Aldo’s…
Chef Aldo Franckin finds it hard to pin down a single dish to talk about. He could wax lyrical about the calamari fritti or the chicken Marsala – made with an Italian fortified wine. But he settles on extolling the virtues of Aldo’s homemade ravioli, filled with a combination of meats and served in a creamy tomato and wine source. Aldo says it makes a big difference having homemade ravioli, which mercifully comes without the chemicals, preservatives and MSG found in massproduced, commercial versions. “It tastes better and it’s better for you – a bit like a good whisky,” he says. Brent Harbour from lovelivelocal.co.nz talks to Aldo about his career, love of Italian food and the inspiration behind Aldo’s Italian Restaurant in Warkworth. Aldo shares memories from being a chef at restaurants around the world and private resorts in Australia. He also recalls times when he worked as a chef at a top restaurant in London which prepared food for the Royal Family at Buckingham Palace and at the Royal Opera House. lovelivelocal.co.nz September 2020

“Think Warkworth is all pretty beaches and farmland? Think again, because if you make the trip up north from Auckland you’ll be rewarded with Italian fare that’ll have you transported right to a family run trattoria in Italy. While Aldo’s is fairly new to the restaurant scene, their tiramisu has been perfected to a fine art. They keep it simple here, with a generous portion of sponge cake, light and fluffy whipped mascarpone, and enough chocolate to satiate even the sweetest tooth—no bells and whistles, but classic Italian at its best.” Urban List October 2019

ALDO’S PASSION, EXPERTISE AND VISION…
Aldo, the creator and personality behind one of Warkworth’s favourite restaurants has decades of culinary expertise and like all leading chefs has a passion for the food he creates. Aldo has an Italian and hospitality heritage and grew up around the Italian family table learning and appreciating Italian cuisine. His family have owned and operated hotels, albergos and restaurants in Italy and Australia. Aldo has worked around the world …… During his early career he worked alongside renowned chef Antonio Carluccio in London where he prepared meals for the Royal Family for Buckingham Palace and the Royal Opera House in Convent Garden.
A kiwi vision ….Aldo moved to live in New Zealand with his wife Susan about 20 years ago where he initially worked as Head Chef at Toto’s Restaurant in Auckland. And now after many years in the hospitality industry Aldo decided it was time to create his own culinary venture. So began Aldo’s own restaurant…….in the heart of Warkworth his home town of many years. He has successfully crafted a menu of classic Italian dishes with fresh and locally sourced ingredients.
Together Aldo, his wife Susan and their team have established an exceptional food experience. With Susan’s warmth and front of house philosophy guests feel welcomed and special.
“Starting Aldo’s required a very different approach for me having worked in large hotels and restaurants. The focus was on small and personal. We built the site in Warkworth ourselves over 3 months and have created an intimate and cosy eatery where guests can eat home made and delicious Italian food.”
– Aldo Franckin

“Only 20 covers, but one of the best restaurants we’ve ever been to. You can’t expect a full menu in a small restaurant, but what Aldo offers is done to perfection, from traditional spaghetti Bolognese to rib eye, not to mention the limoncello baba!! All served with a fabulously friendly welcome. Can’t recommend Aldo’s too highly.”
